What is Tibet Travel Permit

Tibet Travel Permit, also called Tibet Visa, is a document required by Tibet government for foreign visitors, while Chinese and HK citizens do not need it. Here let us tell you more about the Tibet Travel Permit.



How many types of Tibet Permit & Tibet Visa?

Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) 

It will be arranged by our company, this is the most important document of your tour.


Tibet Group Visa

It is the supplementary document of Tibet Travel Permit and ONLY required if you are traveling from Nepal to Tibet, It will be arranged by our company and our Nepal office. 


Alien's Travel Permit (ATP or PSB) 

It is ONLY required for the tours to some restricted areas, which is not important to know as your travel agent will manage it.


Military Permit

It is ONLY required for the tours to some restricted areas such as Nagari area, the military permit is not important for you to know as our company will manage it.



How much the Tibet Permit cost ? 

According to the local government’s regulation, travel agent is only allowed to apply the Tibet permit when visitors actually have booked a tour with the travel agent, the permit could not be phurchased  by independent travellers who do not book any tour with a local agent. 

Futher more, the traveller’s sightseeings in Tibet needs to be accompanied by the tour guide and driver. Travel agents should be responsible for their client’s travel behaviour in Tibet, if any visitor did anything against the government, the travel agent will also be punished seriously.



How do I get the Tibet Permit ? 

If you are flying from China to Tibet

he original permit will be posted to the hotel which you will stay in before taking the flight to Lhasa, you can get the permit from the hotel bell counter when check in.  You will need to show the original permit for the flight boarding. 


If you are taking train from China to Tibet

You will not need the original permit, what you need is only a permit copy. 


If you are coming from Nepal to Tibet (by flight or overland)

You do not need to care about the Tibet permit, because the permit copy has been sent to our Nepal office for Group Visa application, you only need the Group Visa for entering Tibet.  



What visas required for my Tibet travel ?

For visitors who are coming from China to Tibet

There are 2 major visa types for Tibet travel, which are “L” and “Z” types.

---“L” type visa, which is also called travel visa, this is the most popular visa type among travelers.

---“Z” type visa, which is also called working visa, this is for the people who work or reside in China. If you are having a Z type visa, you need to get a company proving document with your company head title + stamp seal + your passport name+ passport number, the time you start to working for this company.  Your tour operator will send you the sample document after the booking is made.


For visitors who are coming from Nepal to Tibet

Please do NOT apply any china visa from your country as it is useless, the right document is the Tibet Group Visa, which will be arranged by our company and our Nepal office. 



Documents required for different types of visa holders 

Different types of Chinese visa holders are required to provide different documents for Tibet Travel Permit application. See details below: 


Visa Type: L    

Purpose of visit: sightseeing, travel, tours. 

Required documents:   

>> Passport copy

>> Visa copy 


Visa Type: Q2  

Purpose of visit: China Family Visit for visitors of Chinese origin. 

Required documents:   

>> Passport copy

>> Visa copy 

>> A document from your Chinese family member, it must be in Chinese and with invitor's Chinese ID card copies.


Visa Type: Z   

Purpose of visit: Employment, Commercial activities. 

Required documents:   

>> Passport copy

>> Visa copy 

>> Company document to prove your identity.


Visa Type: D    

Purpose: Permanent residence

Required documents:  

>> Passport copy

>> Visa copy 

>> Working Permit 

>> Residence Permit 


Visa Type: Tibet Group Visa    

Purpose of visit: This is ONLY required for visitors who are coming from Nepal to Tibet. 

Required documents:   

>> Passport copy

>> 3 photos of passport photo size. 

Note: It is no need to apply any other China visa if you are coming from Nepal to Tibet, you can just provide the passport copy, then we will manage the Tibet Group Visa with our Nepal office, once you are in Nepal, our guide will take you the Chinese embassy (located in Nepal) to get the Tibet Group Visa, which you can use for entering Tibet. 


Visa Type: X1/X2    

Purpose of visit: Students. 

Required documents:   

>> Passport copy

>> Visa copy 

>> Document from your school to prove you identity.


Visa Type: C    

Purpose: Crew member or motor vehicle driver

Required documents:  

>> Passport copy    

>> Visa copy 

>> Company document to prove your identity (Details) 


Visa Type: F   (This type of visa holders could not get Tibet travel permit) 

Purpose of visit: Invited groups with the purpose of study, exchange, trade, etc. 

Required documents:   

>> Passport copy

>> Visa copy 

>> Document from your company or school to prove you identity 

Note: If you are invited by government agents, we will not be able to accept your application directly, you need to contact the government to get the special Tibet visiting admission.


Visa Type: M   

Purpose of visit: Commerce & Trade. 

Required documents:   

>> Passport copy

>> Visa copy 

>> Company document to prove your identity



Group Visa for traveling from Nepal to Tibet 

After the tour is booked, we will start to apply the Tibet permit in Tibet, then the lcoal tourist administration will issue the Tibet permit together with an Invitation Letter, we then send these file copys to their Katmandu office by email attachment, our Nepal office will use these file to apply the Tibet Group Visa for you. Once you are in the Nepal, our Nepal guide will take you to the Chinese embassy (lcoated in Kathmandu) to get the Tibet Group Visa, and what you need to provide is your original passport + 3 photos of passport photo size 

Cost of Tibet GROUP VISA

American:  $175+30 service fee

Romanian: $90+30 service fee

Serbia:  $85+30 service fee

Others countries:  $85+30 service fee

Pakistan/Albania/Bosiand/Horzeguvina/Micronesia/Maldives:  $26+30 service fee



Who CAN'T apply for a Tibet permit?

F type visa holders 

F” type visa holders such as Journalists, diplomats could NOT get Tibet Travel Pemit due to local government's limitation, please do NOT try to get this type of visa if you want to visit Tibet 


Indian pilgrims groups.

Indian pilgrim groups traveling to Nagari area (Mt.Kailash) have to go to special local operators for a pilgrim tour, there are only 4 travel companies can handle Indian pilgrim groups. We are not one of them. 



NEVER mention Tibet tour to the embassy when applying your visa 

Tibet is politically sensitive area in China, it has a lot of strick and rediculous regulations. Please do NOT mention anything about your Tibet tour to the Chinese Embassy, otherwise your China visa application will be rejected, many clients did to listen to our advice and had to give up their China visa application, so please kindly take this seriously. After deposit is made, we will send you the Invitation Letter to assist your China Visa application, your Tibet part tour in the invitation letter will be replaced by other China tours in order to pass the visa application. Once again, please do NOT mention your Tibet part tour to the embassy workers when applying a China visa. .



Multiple-Entry visa

You need to apply for a multiple entry visa when you coming in and out of China for more than one time. Please note that, Hong Kong and Macao are considered to be international stops, so if you do China-HK-China, you will need multiple-entry visa .



Visa free policy 

Visitors from Singapore, Brunei and Japan enjoy 15 days visa free for business, sightseeing, visiting relatives and friends or transit.
